A new year is upon us. For many, the year will be filled with the usual challenges of maintaining their LIS and assuring that laboratory needs are being met. Laboratorians will also be thinking about the impact of ACOs, MU, 5010, ICD-10, on laboratory operations, reimbursements and integration with other related hospital information systems.

For others, who may be facing a "sea change" in their environment with their hospital planning, transitioning or installing an enterprise-wide information system, new challenges will appear. What will be the impact of an enterprise-wide information system on the laboratory? Will the enterprise system's LIS component meet current and future needs? Will an integrated environment deliver the promised benefits? What will be the best strategies for moving forward?
