Single-Vendor Enterprise-Wide Systems

The pressure for laboratories to adopt an LIS as part of a single vendor, enterprise-wide system is not new. Large hospital information system vendors as far back as the 1970s often included some laboratory applications as part of their offerings. So, how are things different now? To a certain extent, the same issues remain. Can an LIS from a single, enterprise-wide system vendor really meet the detailed needs of my laboratory?
The answer is .maybe. Many large hospital systems vendors have learned a lot about laboratory needs and wants. Some, in fact, have had their origins as laboratory information systems vendors. Nevertheless, as I like to say, "Labs are all the same..except for the differences." That being the case, each laboratory facing pressure to adopt an enterprise-wide laboratory system solution needs to conduct an evidence-based evaluation and gap analysis to determine if any particular single-vendor enterprise-wide LIS component will suffice for its present and future needs. For the next issues of the "Corner," I'll discuss some approaches to conduct such an evaluation.
