OraSure Technologies recently co-sponsored the "Step Up to The Plate Against Hepatitis C" initiative as part of a nationwide effort by Major League Baseball to bring attention to the causes and treatment of Hepatitis C at several ballparks throughout the country. Sponsored by Merck, the American Liver Foundation, Coalition of Positive Health Empowerment and OraSure, the program offers free hepatitis C testing and promotes education and support for the prevention, diagnosis and management of hepatitis C.
Lance Berkman, outfielder and first baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals, recently said: "About 3.2 million Americans are infected and many are unaware so I am urging people to get tested and visit allabouthepc.com/baseball for more information about the disease."
Keith Moreland, a former MLB outfielder, and now Chicago Cubs' analyst on WGN-AM and the Cubs Radio Network, commented: "One of my family members was infected with hepatitis C, so I saw first-hand how crucial it is for people to be made aware of this fatal disease. You can find out if you have chronic hepatitis C from a simple blood test."
Brad Mills, manager of the Houston Astros, said: "I was stunned to hear that a person may not have symptoms for many years even though they have hepatitis C. That's why it's important for people to come out and get tested. The test is simple and confidential. I want to make people aware of the seriousness of this disease."
