Clinical and research laboratories have dedicated a lot of time to educational outreach lately in an effort to spark the interest of students from all age groups. ADVANCE focuses two programs in particular with strong efforts in outreach to the next generation of laboratory professionals. Take a look at our gallery and see how North Shore LIJ Health System and Ochsner Health System have been keeping students busy.
North shore LIJ Health System recently hosted students from a South Bronx high school as they completed a microbiology project with the help of medical professionals from Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park that will be presented at Rockefeller University and the general American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology meeting in Boston.
Ochsner Health System started the iLab Student Outreach Laboratory in New Orleans, LA, a training laboratory for schools in the community that hosts student groups -- from middle school to college -- throughout the year. Ochsner also hosts a forensic experiment for students to teach about DNA and how to work with professional laboratory equipment, properly use a pipette, run DNA samples on a gel, and look deeper into investigative science. This field trip is free of charge.
