Already the home of over 100 bioscience/lifescience companies including industry giants Roche, Ventana and Sanofi-Aventis, Tucson and Southern Arizona are rapidly becoming a widely recognized center for new bioscience companies and innovations in the biosciences. Capitalizing on relationships with the University of Arizona, federal and state funding, foundation grants, investor venture capitalization and strong community support, the area has incubated a number of bioscience start-up companies in public-private partnerships.
For example, the University of Arizona Science and Technology Park/Arizona Center for Innovation and the BIO5 Institute facilitate multidisciplinary bioscience research and provide internships and educational opportunities in the field. Spin-offs incubated from this environment have included companies such as bioVidria, Luceome, Medipacs, BioVigilant, Critical Path Institute and High Throughput Genomics among others.
The University has recently broken ground for a new 65-acre bioscience park. Designed as an urban park, it will help meet the need for a state-of-the art commercial bioscience facility. When completed, the park will include, in addition to research and development facilities, a hotel/conference center, housing for faculty and students, offices and retail space and a bioscience technical high school.
In conjunction with the Tucson Regional Economic Opportunities organization (www.treoaz.org), various university, commercial and community leaders are aggressively pursuing quality-growth bioscience business for the Southern Arizona region. They bring together the people, partners, programs and services necessary for success. Their motto, "It takes a community to raise a company".
