| U.S. Biovigilance Network |
| The U.S. Biovigilance Network, a public/private collaboration between the federal government and organizations involved in blood collection, transfusion and tissue and organ transplantation, aims to reduce adverse reactions associated with blood transfusion. The network will eventually be comprised of four components: a recipient hemovigilance module, focusing on patients who receive blood components; a donor hemovigilance module, tracking adverse reactions associated with the donation process; a tissue transplantation sentinel network, reporting on adverse events associated with tissue/organ transplants; and a cell therapy module, tracking outcomes for cellular therapies.

| Improving HIV Detection |
| Excellent progress has been made in HIV prevention and treatment in the last 20 years, and survival rates are significantly higher thanks to effective anti-viral drug treatments such as protease inhibitors that work to keep the virus at bay. Yet the epidemic persists, and thousands continue to get infected every year and transmit the virus to others. Laboratory methods routinely used for diagnosing HIV infection in the United States are based on the detection of anti-HIV antibodies that remain negative during the first three to five weeks of infection. Early, acute infections, however, can only be diagnosed during this period by testing for viral antigen or nucleic acids, which measure the presence of the HIV virus directly.

Simply put, platelets can be under-sticky or over-sticky; and both are problematic.
